about satala

Satala, nestled within Pago Pago Bay on Tutuila Island, stands as one of the constituent villages of Pago Pago. Positioned in Maoputasi County within the Eastern District, Satala boasts several notable landmarks and facilities.

Among its treasures is the renowned Satala Cemetery, a site of historical significance listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Additionally, Satala hosts the government-owned Ronald Reagan Marina Railway Shipyard.

Notably, the village is home to the Satala Power Plant, situated on the northwest coast of Pago Pago Harbor. This plant, which previously supplied all of Tutuila Island's power, now stands as a testament to resilience after succumbing to damage from the 2009 tsunami, rendering it inactive.

Satala's industrial landscape includes BFK, Inc., which erected the Kneubuhl Warehouse near the docks to facilitate cargo handling as the exclusive agent for Matson Shipping Lines. In later years, the Pacifica Foods processing plant emerged on this site, adding to the village's economic activity.

In terms of dining, Satala boasts Paradise Pizza, a popular eatery offering American-style pizzas infused with local flavors, conveniently located near StarKist Tuna.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Satala housed 61 housing units and accommodated 297 residents, reflecting a growth trend from 1950 when it was home to 162 residents.

HISTORY

In 1968, the newly constructed Marina Railway at Satala commenced operations, tailored to accommodate ships of up to 800 tons, with a specific focus on serving the burgeoning Oriental fishing fleets.

Following the devastation inflicted by the 2009 tsunami upon the Satala Power Plant, a resilient response emerged in the form of a new power facility. In May 2017, a state-of-the-art power plant was inaugurated, situated on elevated terrain to mitigate risks, offering quieter operations compared to its predecessor.
