There’s nothing like catching a local bus when visiting a new destination with a map in hand and testing your senses and seeing how good your geography and mapping skills.
Here in American Samoa we have our own version of local or ‘aiga’ (family) buses as they are called.

Where to catch buses
Bus stops are found throughout the main island of Tutuila, but you can stop and catch a bus from anywhere on the side of the road simply by waving down a bus. All buses have village names on them and travel from their respective villages to the bus depot at Fagatogo in town and then return.

The buses operate throughout the day with services ending around 5.00pm at night Monday to Friday. On Saturday services are reduced and on Sundays only a handful of buses operate.

Fares and zones
For no more than $2.50 one way you can travel from the town to either the western or eastern end of Tutuila.

For those travelers who only require a vehicle for short trips, catching a taxi is an affordable and cheap way to travel.
There are a number of taxi companies operating through Tutuila.

Fares and zones
The Commerce Commission sets out the fares for taxi and buses. For between $25 and $35 you can travel one way from the marketplace in the town area to either the eastern or western end of the island respectively.
